Why 600x600mm Remains the Most Popular Tile Size

Despite the growing popularity of large-format tiles, the 600x600mm square format remains the most widely specified tile size globally. Its enduring popularity stems from its versatility: the square format works in any room orientation without creating a directional bias; it is easy to install with standard tools and techniques; it is available in the widest range of designs and finishes; and it is the most cost-effective large-format option in terms of both tile price and installation cost.

For residential projects, 600x600mm tiles are the standard specification for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. For commercial projects, they are widely used in offices, retail spaces, and hospitality environments. The 600x600mm format is also the most common size for outdoor applications, where its manageable weight and size make installation straightforward.

Ceramic vs Porcelain 600x600mm: Which to Choose?

Our 600x600mm range is available in both ceramic and porcelain. Ceramic 600x600mm tiles are suitable for light-duty floor applications and wall use. They are more cost-effective than porcelain and easier to cut, making them popular for DIY installations. Water absorption 3–6%. Porcelain GVT/PGVT 600x600mm tiles are suitable for all floor and wall applications, including high-traffic commercial areas, wet areas, and outdoor use. Water absorption <0.5%, breaking strength >1300N, PEI 4–5. For any application where durability and moisture resistance are important, porcelain is the recommended choice.

Buying & Installation Tips

For small rooms, 600×600mm tiles can actually make the space feel larger than smaller tiles — fewer grout lines, cleaner look.
In bathrooms, use 600×600mm matt tiles on the floor and 300×600mm glossy tiles on the walls for a classic combination.
For outdoor use, always specify frost-resistant porcelain 600×600mm tiles with R10 anti-slip rating.
A diagonal (45°) layout with 600×600mm tiles creates a classic, elegant look — add 15% extra for cuts.
For commercial spaces, specify full body 600×600mm tiles with PEI 5 rating for maximum durability.
Order 8% extra for straight lay, 15% for diagonal layout to account for cuts at room edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Contrary to popular belief, larger tiles can make small rooms appear bigger by reducing the number of grout lines. A 600x600mm tile in a small bathroom or kitchen creates a cleaner, more open look than smaller tiles. The key is to ensure the tile design is not too busy or dark, which can make a small space feel enclosed.

You need approximately 2.78 tiles per square metre for 600x600mm tiles (1 ÷ 0.36 sq.m per tile). Add 10% for cuts and wastage, so for a 20 sq.m room, order approximately 62 tiles (56 + 10% wastage).

Ceramic 600x600mm tiles have water absorption of 3–6% and are suitable for light-duty floors and walls. Porcelain 600x600mm tiles have water absorption below 0.5%, higher breaking strength, and are suitable for all applications including wet areas, high-traffic commercial floors, and outdoor use. Porcelain is more durable but slightly more expensive.
