What Are GVT and PGVT Tiles?
Before comparing the two, it helps to understand what they have in common. Both GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tiles) and PGVT (Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles) start from the same base: a vitrified tile body. Vitrification is a manufacturing process where a mixture of clay, feldspar, and silica is pressed under high pressure and fired at temperatures above 1200°C. This process creates an extremely dense, low-porosity tile body with water absorption below 0.5% — far lower than standard ceramic tiles (3–6%).
The key difference between GVT and PGVT comes after the kiln: PGVT tiles undergo an additional mechanical polishing process that transforms the surface finish from the natural post-kiln state into a mirror-like, high-gloss surface.
GVT Tiles: Finish Options and Characteristics
GVT tiles are available in a wide range of surface finishes, each with distinct aesthetic and functional characteristics:
- Matt Finish: Non-reflective, smooth surface. Excellent slip resistance (DCOF >0.42 wet). Hides footprints and dust. Ideal for floors in living rooms, bedrooms, and commercial spaces.
- Rustic Finish: Textured surface mimicking natural stone or aged wood. Higher slip resistance than matt. Popular for outdoor areas and spaces with a natural aesthetic.
- Carving Finish: Three-dimensional relief patterns embossed into the glaze. Creates dramatic shadow effects. Best for feature walls and accent areas.
- Sugar Finish: Fine crystalline texture with a subtle sparkle. Premium look between matt and gloss. Popular for living room floors.
- Endless Matt: Continuous pattern with no visible repeat. Creates a seamless, natural-looking floor across large areas.
PGVT Tiles: The Polishing Process
PGVT tiles begin as standard GVT tiles. After the kiln process, they pass through a multi-head polishing line where progressively finer abrasive heads remove micro-roughness from the glaze surface. The result is a flat, highly reflective surface with a gloss level of 80–90 GU (Gloss Units) — a true mirror-like finish.
The polishing process also improves the tactile smoothness of the tile and enhances the visual depth of marble-look and stone-look designs, making the veining and colour gradients appear more vivid and three-dimensional.
GVT vs PGVT: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | GVT | PGVT |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Finish | Matt, Rustic, Carving, Sugar | Mirror Polish, High Gloss |
| Gloss Level | 5–30 GU | 80–90 GU |
| Slip Resistance | Excellent (DCOF >0.42) | Lower (not recommended for wet floors) |
| Maintenance | Hides dust and footprints | Shows fingerprints and water spots |
| Best For | Floors, wet areas, outdoor | Luxury interiors, feature walls, dry floors |
| Visual Effect | Natural, understated | Glamorous, light-amplifying |
| Water Absorption | <0.5% | <0.5% |
| Breaking Strength | >1300N | >1300N |
Which Should You Choose?
The choice between GVT and PGVT depends primarily on the application and the design intent:
- Choose GVT when: Slip resistance is a priority (floors, wet areas, outdoor), you want a low-maintenance surface that hides dust and footprints, you prefer a natural or textured aesthetic, or you are specifying for high-traffic commercial areas.
- Choose PGVT when: You want a luxurious, light-amplifying surface, the application is a dry area (living room, bedroom, hotel lobby), you are working with marble-look designs where the polished surface enhances the visual depth, or you want to maximise the impact of artificial lighting design.
Many designers use both in the same project — PGVT for the main living areas and feature walls, GVT for bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. This approach delivers the best of both worlds: visual luxury where it matters most, and practical performance where it is needed.
